’Hakka slangs and the Words of the Master’
Publication Date:The Hakkas are a branch of the Han nationality. Since the ancient times, the Hakka dialect has long been a widely used language in Central Plains. It has been passed down generations by generations from the Hakka ancestors. The Hakka ancestors left behind words of wisdom and philosophy in easily understood discourses; those that are able to read can easily understand the meaning within the words, and put which to use; even the general folks can understand the meaning of which orally with ease, which is widely used in communications of daily lives. These words are the so-called slangs, Words of the Master. At first, the Hakka slangs and Words of the Master are mainly passed down orally. The inheritance of which happen between the general folks with no written documentation. With the rise of modern baihua (vernacular literary language), a small part of which are documented in Chinese characters. As the majority of the modern generation tend to use computers, coupled with the addition of phonetic symbols to the written documentations, one can easily see the wisdom and experience within. ‘The Pioneer - Wenqi He’s Artistic Life’
Publication Date:The word ‘Pioneer’ refers to ‘the person that first discover or help develop something new, make exemplary examples for others, or pave the way for others to follow’. Born in the year 1931, Mr. Wenqi He is a well-known post-war artist who is passionate about art education and creation for his entire life. Since 1964, Mr. He started upon his journey of rural sketch creation, thereby discovering that what really embodies the inner feelings is the everyday life that is often overlooked and even neglected. He then turned to devote himself in a large number of hometown scenery and ancient buildings sketches. Cities and towns of all sizes near the Kaohsiung and Pintung areas in which he lives in, hold footprints of his visits, thereby leaving sketches of precious past features of such areas. In particular are the traditional buildings such as tiles, horsebacks, houses, roof ridges and windows of Liudui Hakka villages, as well as everyday tools such as mortars, spring couplets and Wufu paper cuttings or customs are hugely featured in his works. The series of works are also viewed as Mr. He’s most iconic creations in his career. National Mobile Museum of Taiwan Literature – The Inner World of Taiwan Literature
Publication Date:‘Brightness – The Stream Never Stops Flowing: The Familial Story of Liudui and Longjian’ This book defines the three connotations of ‘culture’ through anthropology, and describes changes in Liudui Longjian (rice mill) and the labor and life of Longjian families (practitioners) from three aspects including material technology, social ethics and spiritual beliefs. Through the rise and fall of Longjian, the book explored the local culture and social situation involved in the economic changes of rice mills in Liudui. The economics of fruit orchards have overwhelmingly replaced that of rice and become the main body of the current agricultural landscape in Hakka villages in Pingtung Plains. In contrast, at the same time, Youdui as located in the north of Liudui has experienced a ‘delayed shift’ in its rice industry through the fight for monopoly tobacco crops, thereby generated a ‘cultural insulation’ effect indirectly. ‘Brightness – The Stream Never Stops Flowing: The Familial Story of Hsingchunqin and Longjian’ The protagonist, Lizhen, aged 28, is reminiscing everything she went through from when she was still small on the eve of her wedding. In the three months of preparation for the wedding, from the thunderstorms in the summer afternoon, the bowl of pork blood soup on the dining table, the scenery of the plain after the autumn harvest, to photos of the family trip… everything reminds her of the historical memory of the family. The life of her great-grandfather, born at the end of the Qing Dynasty, marks beginning of the flourishing family history. From small traders to grocery stores and even in curlews; the curlew set up by her grandfather harvests paddies from Pingtung Plain every winter year after year. Her father inherited the fire curlew when the Taiwanese society is under the transition from Japanese rule to the post-WWII historical wave. With his familiarity and passion for machinery, the family’s fire curlew headed for expansion, collection of public grain, and consistent management. However, with the implementation of agricultural policy reforms, the area for rice planation declined by year, and the earned profits were no longer able to offset the expanses of plantation. Her father started to consider thoughts of whether he should continue the business of rice harvesting. As the youngest daughter of the family, Lizhen only learned of many stories from the mouths of her grandmother, father, mother or sisters. Before forming her new family, she wants to do something for the family, leaving something for the agricultural business of the land. As the end of her wedding video draws near, her reminiscing comes to an end. Publication Date:‘The Lively End of Winter Performance’ The End of Winter Performance of Taiwanese Hakka villages, also known as Peace Performance, originates from the traditional concept of ‘wish by spring, harvest by autumn’. Hakka farmers make their wishes every spring, hoping that the weather would be mild, benefiting the year’s harvest; by the time of harvest in autumn, to thank the blessing of gods, they would prepare rich sacrifices and invite foreign troupes to perform before the gods as a meaning of grandeur to show their appreciation to the gods. As there has been no rain for some time already, the rice of the village is about to die. He would then be unable to enjoy the feast, so he hurried to the upper reaches of the waterway to seek the help of Field Pak-kung with Ajiujian. However, the two fell asleep accidentally. In his dream, Adigu saw an old man with silver beards grinning at him. He even found himself lying on the soft clouds… A series of exciting and interesting adventures begin here.
