第二特展室 - 「錫金歲月-客家馬來西亞錫礦展」(已撤展)
策展理念
南洋錫礦的發展，造就客家人離鄉背井的動力。來自中國閩粵二省的嘉應州、惠州、汀州等地客籍移工因採錫而致富，影響了近代馬來西亞都市發展。本展以「錫」意義的轉變，來說明馬來西亞客家族群的社會文化變遷之外，讓大眾理解客家人自原鄉遷徙後，在各地發展出不同的生活樣貌。期待從馬來西亞的客家人因開採錫礦，所衍生不同面向發展與變遷，讓大眾對於「客家」能有更多元的認識。
一、無奈何下南洋
18世紀以來，馬來半島許多地區被探測出蘊含大量錫礦，其中尤以霹靂州（Perak）、雪蘭莪州（Selangor）和森美蘭州（Negeri Sembilan）的錫礦含量最為豐富。來自中國南方沿海的廣東和福建二省移工，特別是廣東惠州與嘉應州、福建汀州等地客籍移工，進而造就了1850年代馬來西亞錫礦的黃金時期，進而主導了馬來西亞首府吉隆坡(Kuala Lumpur)與怡保(Ipoh)、芙蓉(Seremban)等城市的開發。
二、過往錫礦風華歲月
隨著技術的演變以及18世紀工業革命的發展下，開採錫礦由勞力密集，轉變成機械化的開採方式。整個19世紀錫礦產量值達到高峰。19世紀中晚期，在英國逐步掌控馬來亞各州，殖民影響力逐步深入每個錫礦區，控制了錫礦開採以及交通要道，最終英國人在錫礦開採與佔有率逐步超越華人，客裔的採錫產業從此逐漸蕭條。
三、落地生根、開枝散葉
從霹靂州華僑礦務公會的1950年會員名冊中，若依203名錫礦經營者會員登記之籍貫統計，客家人佔了101名，可見客家人在霹靂州錫礦產業中之重要地位。在霹靂州怡保錫礦家姚德勝、梁碧如、胡子春等人，都是從一介錫礦工轉變成錫礦實業家，更參與霹靂州的議會，建立會館。現今在吉隆坡與怡保的部分街道巷弄，更以錫礦實業家葉亞來與姚德勝名字來命名，可見證過去客籍錫礦家的影響力，用以不同的方式流傳至今。
四、日久他鄉是故鄉
馬來亞內部客家族群群聚的地點，可以觀察到有多重的衝突與整合。衝突表現在1861至1873年的義興黨與海山黨因之奪資源而引發的亂事；整合表現在各方言群成立會館、辦理學堂，或是由不同族群合建廟宇。顯示了客家族群為了在新移民的新生活，所產生的在地化的過程。
五、馬來西亞客家的一錫之地。
錫礦業不僅帶給華族的經濟上的富裕，也註記下客家族群在馬來西亞錫礦開發歷史一頁。十八世紀後期因錫礦引起的人群移動，讓馬來西亞吸納了不同族群，讓馬來西亞成為多族群、多文化的大熔爐。「錫」原來是客家移工謀生的經濟來源，現在則是轉化成最具客家意義的集體記憶，這集體記憶更是承載了客家族群為生活、求生存的奮進精神！
